Hennie was born and bred in the Karoo town of Graaff-Reinet in 1953, where he matriculated from Hoër Volkskool in 1971. Remaining in the Eastern Cape, he attended the University of Port Elizabeth, (now NMMU) where he attained a B.Proc degree.
After a short stint working in the Deceased Estates Department in The Trust Bank of Africa, in Cape Town, he entered in 1978 into articles with Kobus Horn of Booysen & Horn in Parow. After ceding his articles to Du Plessis, Kriel and Veldtman in Parow he was admitted as attorney and conveyancer and practiced as such with them for two years.
In 1982, Hennie and the other founder members of Van Niekerk Groenewoud & Van Zyl, took the bold step of starting a new practice which later become known as VGV Attorneys. He was also admitted as a Notary Public in 1986.
In 2016 he and Eberhard Kruger, who was his co-director at VGV for some 10 years, decided to start a niche legal practice concentrating on providing specialized services to a hand picked number of existing clients as well as offering dedicated services to property developers and estate agencies that require high end services with uncompromising integrity.
His involvement in assisting property owners under duress as a result of foreclosure proceedings by mortgagees with unique solutions is very close to his heart.
He currently runs a successful property and commercial practice with sectional and conventional title developments as priority with advice on the structuring and development of retirement villages as his specialty of which more than 30 such developments serve as testimony.
His social interests include golf, good food and wine, travel, amateur genealogy and reading.
